This oval-shaoed atoll, 300 km to the north-west of Tahiti and around ten kilometres from Rangiroa, enjoys a large channel passage, and a series of islets, the largest of wich 900 metres wide, lying to the south-west of the atoll, is inhabited. The name of Tikehau came from after a man Tii and a woman, Hau, who associated their names for their names for thei child, Tiehau became Tikehau meaning "peaceful landing"

Peaceful Landing

The charming flowering village of Tuherahera is situated on the south of this long motu, and is complimented by two other village: Tuheiava, an important lagoon fishing centre with numerous fish parks that supply the markets of Tahiti and Maiai, on the other large motu in the north-east, is exploited in the traditional fashion for its copra.

The Bird Islands

Tikehau is one of the most beautiful atolls in Polynesia, and also provides a home for many colonies of birds that take shelter in its little motu, including "bird islands", known for its red-footed boobies and brown noddies. However, Tikehau is also reputated to be one with the largest supply of fish.
